Artists give presents - September 20

Artwork by Ohad Milshtein ART TLV

One week before Rosh-Hashana, this years exhibition season opens with “Present,” an exhibition in Jaffa, Poria 8, curated by Rakefet Viner Omer

Viner Omer asked several artists she admires, young and senior, all of them active and successful, to give a present to their audience. They responded enthusiastically. Many top artists contributed either a piece of art or a signed reproduction, something personal, an object, sometime funny or sophisticated, or something from their home or studio which is connected to how they think of themselves or of art or their audience

Each artist contributed something to the show because of an inner urge, a strong desire that needs to satisfied. Inherent in the creation of art is a desire and a need to give. This desire to give goes beyond what the market dictates, and beyond the need to take, absorb, purchase, and collect. Art, at its purest, always returns back to the artist in unpredictable ways, so that the ability to give a present to the audience is fundamental

The neccesity to give is powerful, like a demand. Sometimes its funny and touching
The audience always recieves something from the art, and always returns something to the artist, even if unintentional and subliminal. All artists expect, hope and need this cycle of giving and recieving. Sometimes it seems as if a pure and modest place, even a poor place, has withdrawn from our reality when one is looking at the role big money plays in the art world and that art plays in the world of big money. And yet there always exists a small give and take, sometimes graceful and sometimes bastardized. One of the artists suggested giving some hashish … An artists’ gift to a gallery audience can break through accepted norms and thinking, even bringing risk to the artist and can be percieved as subversive thinking.
The audience is invited to see what the artists gave, but mainly they are invited to come and recieve a present
